Selia Karsten BA, BEd (equiv) MFA, EdD

Dr. Selia Karsten, winner of the 2003 Ontario Educational Technology Committee Impact Award for outstanding contributions to teaching and learning with technology in an Ontario college and of the 2000 International College Teaching and Learning award for innovative excellence in teaching, learning and technology, has a special interest in cultivating student creativity and promoting self-actualization.

She teaches How to Be a Successful Student, Effective Business Presentations , E-Commerce and (online) Web-Based Learning at Seneca. She does training workshops for faculty in the Professional Development Department including the BlackBoard learning management system and developing eportfolios. She serves on the BB/MySeneca Communications and Faculty Subcommittees, chairs the ePortfolio initiative and is a consultant for the Ontario Colleges Marketing Competition at Seneca. Her projects include CD ROM and video-taped learning materials and web-based courses for classroom and on-line and presently, research concerning lanaguage learning and student success.

She also teaches (online), Enhancing Holistic Learning with Computer Technology as well as The Holistic Curriculum course in the Curriculum Teaching and Learning Department at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto where she completed her doctoral work in Computer Applications and Holistic and Aesthetic Studies in 1999.  She is also Web Mistress and an active member of the Holistic Educator Group at OISE/UT. She has just completed the Designing Curriculum Using Technology Certificate.

Through Karsten Productions she produces on-line learning modules for McGraw-Hill Ryerson and Thomson Nelson Learning. At Astralsite.com she builds websites for educators, artists and caregivers. Selia's background includes directing, producing, designing, writing and performing in the theatre, video production, multimedia, life skills counseling and career development, prior learning assessment, and alternate modes of course delivery. Her interests span photography, writing, graphics, languages, martial arts, scuba diving and travel.
