A note to all of my 610 students on the occasion of submitting their first project of the semester:
"just a tip when you suggest to students that
they should create a temp
file and work from that in the computer
lab you might want to tell them
that if they have to shut down their computer
the temp file will empty
and all their work will be lost. That is
just what happened to me, and
after the very helpful jerks in the computer
lab laughed at me they told
me that it was gone. So here I sit 4 hours
wasted and no web site
completed."
This is a very sad message and one that is inaccurate. In my classes I have suggested that you create a folder with your name on it in "My Documents" and work from the C Drive where My Documents is located. I demonstrate this in nearly every class as I show how to FTP from my folder in My Documents to my learn account.
I am getting a number of sad messages as the deadlines come and go for the first assignment for MRK 610. This is no surprise and the project is one that is designed to help you get your cyberlegs and come to terms with the tools early on before you start the StoreFronts or E-Sites. I am hoping that those of you who worked ahead and allowed time for problems to be solved (they inevitably occur when working with computers) are pleased that you have avoided the stress that comes with last minute completion of a project.
Most of you have had me for a previous class and you know that I am not the enemy - I am on your side, cheering you on to every success possible. I am sorry when you have failures or make mistakes. I do encourage you to learn from them as this is the place to make them - not out there on the job. OK you say - you aren't planning to be a webpage maker - but you are planning to live in a digital age using computers as tools so whatever happens, you will want to make a fresh resolve to do the best you can on each and every project if for no other reason than to prove that you can do it and do it well. See you in class and we'll motor on regardless, making as many good things happen as possible. And don't forget - my e-mail is always "on" and I am eager to help you when you ask for help. Regards, Selia
