E-Commerce: Course Evaluations for MRK610 Winter 2000
(new course developed fall 1999, first time delivered)

I feel that this course as a whole is designed in an effective way that allows for personal/professional growth. The individual web site is an example of personal growth. This course enhanced my knowledge and really openned a new world to me that I paid no attention to. Your teaching style and personality also made for a better learning environment. I have made a few suggestions about a couple assignment in past messages. The suggestion are minor as the course is not only effective in a sense of learning and expanding our knowledge but also about the instructor. You make the classroom an enjoyable and "warm" working environment. Also I think that one-on-one assistance also contributes to the overall effectiveness of the course. Well thank you Selia for all of your help with issues outside of school (attachment) and for being a great teacher. CB

This course has taught me the basic fundaments of web designing, but ion the future I recommend that you go into further technically explaination of computer programs and techniques. Overall I learned a great deal on how to produce a basis webpage and fun doing so. All the best Selia, you were an excellent teacher. LC

overall, I was impressed by the course, and found it to be very usefull. I found you to be a very resourcefull and fair professor. I think the only thing that can be changed for next year would be to elmiate all of the web-site assignments, as they were good, but a research report or something else could have been more usefull. Have a nice summer. MC

I liked this ecommerce course, it was so much fun. My favorite project was portfolio assignment because it helped put our academic and personal achievements on the web. Its been a slice, see ya. GF

I thought that this was a great course. I feel that the methods of evaluation were both fair and revelant to the material presented in the course. I felt that your web pages were very helpful and gave great advice on how to succeed in both this course and in the world of e commerce. I will recommend this course to any marketing student because you stand to learn many useful skills that can be applied in the real world. Overall this was a great learning experience. I had a lot of fun and I really think that I learned some useful skills. I would not suggest changing the course too much. It works well, however, I do think that next semesters students would benefit from a course textbook. Other than that, keep up the good work! MG

This course was very interesting and was very worthwhile to me. I really enjoyed how this course was hands on instead of all tests. Tests only test you on how well you can remember something. By having this course hands on it shows you how well you know how to do something. I hope for the future students of this course that you do not change anything about the course. This was one of my favorite courses in my three years at Seneca College. I hope that you do not change anything about it. Overall this course was an excellent learning experience. BG

Overall, I really enjoyed this course because it had a unique teaching style and unique content. I like using creativity and relating the topics to others that I am presently taking. I like your teaching style Selia because you let us work on our own and learn from our mistakes while gaining hands on experience. You were always available for help, but basically had faith in us to complete all assignments on our own. I learned more from my many mistakes in this class, than perhaps other areas. With each assignment I learned more skills and became more familiar with developing web sites. I think that the discussion groups are a good idea because it keeps students up to date with e-commerce issues. I also required me to regularly do the forums. I think the class site is perfect for this class because we are learning on-line which relates directly to the content of this class (e-commerce). It is very interactive as all student sites and forums are posted. It also prepares us because we are responsible for reading and posting all forums. There are a few things that I would suggest for nest year. First maybe explain the forums and the site in more detail at the beginning of the semester. I was a little confused as to what needed to be accomplished each week at first. It took me a while to get into the course and understand what had to be done. I do not feel I learned a great deal about e-commerce from our first project that involved PowerPoint. I have learned more throughout the course on the weekly readings, the discussion topics, from you and others in the class than from the textbooks on e-commerce. This was a better way of learning too, as it was more interesting. I think you are very fair when distributing marks. I was nervous at first to get marked on my sites because I had little experience developing sites and thought this would reflect in my marks. It didn't, I feel more confident now when developing sites. Although, I feel that the first site that we developed, should have been worth more that 15%. I put a lot of time into that site because it was the first one I developed and think that it should have been worth 20% or maybe even 25%. I did put a lot of time into the group site for the VCO, but because I was more familiar with Communicator, it seemed less difficult. Everyone has put a lot of time and effort into all assignments, and this is reflected in the work that has been completed. I feel that this course has been a great success and will only improve over the years. Especially with all the feedback you must receive. I like it how you are truly interested in the class's opinions on the course and you are always looking for feedback. My other teachers rarely do this, but it is an excellent idea. Thank you for all your help Selia. I plan to take these skills with me in the future to University, even if I am not directly involved with e-commerce, they will be very useful. LH

I did not like the power point project. The student should already know how to do that. If they do not, they have a serious problem. I would like have like the chance to work one on one with you more. All of the other class project made it difficult for me to put my full energy on ecom. Overall this is the best course I took this semester and you are miles ahead of most teachers in the program. I really enough being in your presents. (I am not just saying that for marks, I mean it.) THANK YOU. DJ

Whenever I complete a "hands on" course or a project, I get some satisfaction (refer to week 1 please). My idea of a "REAL" course is having assignments that will benefit me in the "REAL" world; also having a classroom environment where I can get my work started and most importantly enjoy the course. As for a Professor Karsten do not change your ways. I do not want a Professor that is a babysitter and breathing down people necks like a few B.S. instructors this semester. The course should have group e-commerce web site, a 10-link assignment done earlier in the semester and a research paper about 500-1000 words about topics on e-commerce. I would personally scrap the personal profile: been there done that (MRK 530). Overall the course is fine and love the discussion board questions and interaction with other students thoughts and opinion. Like I stated earlier, and in my week 1 intro, finally the bureaucrats of Seneca College came up with a course where I can get some satisfaction. BK

In all I must say that I liked this course, mainly improving my skills and knowledge in building a website. At the beginning of the semester I wasn't too thrilled at having to take this new course, but it wasn't that bad. It was a lot of work but it was worth it and I can't believe it's actually over. The only part that I would change would be the weekly forums. Its a lot of extra work, and might be better if it was every second week. I think that the best assignment for this course was the personal portfolio website. It allowed for personal creativity and was a lot of fun to do. LL

I can honestly say that at the begining of this semester, my knowledge on e-commerce and html was extremely limited. I think that this course contributed alot to my basic web design and e-commerce skills. I enjoyed the way the course was set up, with classwork as well as via the web. I think it was important to make the weekly discussion boards, and reading articles and links on the web, other than a required textbook, it gave us more hands on experience and knowledge of how e-commerce really works.I enjoyed designing the personal home page, and the report, as well as all other assignments. I think that in the future perhaps Front Page or any other web building tools can also be used in the course. Overall I believe that this course is essential for marketing students, and should be a required course, not only for 3 year marketing students but also for the 2 year diploma students. ML

this is my last post, i'd like to thank Selia for all the time she spent on-line and at home to bring us this course on-line i know what it takes to do so!! overall i had fun in this course, it is a very difficult subject to teach, due to the different skill level of students for next time i would recommend to split up the class into teams that have one strong skilled person and some that are on other levels of understanding. this would result in that student helping out others just like i did this term, over all, it has been great, many new concepts and ideas were inspired in this class [at least for me they were]. all the best to everyone in their future ventures. EL

I liked this ecommerce course because it helped build by web-making skills. Some suggestions I have for next year include eliminating the team discussion boards because it is difficult to keep track of who did what. Individual discussions are more efficient because you can keep track of your own work more easily. I also liked the portfolio site we did because it helped put our academic and personal achievements on the web. For the team web sites I suggest that teams make up their own company and create a website for that company, or even team up with other courses such as Entrepreneurship or Direct Marketing to build ecommerce sites. BL

I found that the class website was useful throughout the year. It allowed us to continually return to it for further information and it provided access to current issues in e-commerce. Some of the forums were teadious but they were still helpful. MP

I definitely learned more about website designing than I did before taking this course. It was interesting and fun and it allowed us to put our creativity to use. However, I think that having a text book would have helped. I hope that the presentations we made to you about the text books will help youu to find one that is suitable for the course. The most valuable part of this course was the portfolio assignment--it is definitely a great asset to use in our future. Good luck with this course next year selia. KR

Although my initial reaction to taking five courses in semester six was one of disappointment, my reaction to MRK610 was one of complete and total excitement. Here I was getting the opportunity to take a course in e-commerce, the medium of the 21st century. Anyways, I thought that MRK610 was an excellent course, it was very informative about e-commerce issues, and it was very practical with the assignements. As well, I found that the weekly discussion boards were very helpful in educating me extensively about e-commerce and what e-commerce is and how it is being used. Overall, I found MRK610 to be an excellent and practical course in preparing students for the real world, the world of the 21 century where e-commerce will rule. In closing, I feel that aside from a few minor changes MRK610 will continue to be an excellent course for preparing students for the real world and will be enjoyed by future MRK610 students. P.S. Don't change, and keep up the excellent job Mrs.Karsten. I had a lot of fun and would recommend this course to anyone. NATHAN SALAS MMRK610 TT . NS

First, I really like the idea of the home page and how every one in the class can communicate. Access to students home pages should result in concequences since the material may be offensive. Teams should be no more than three members to aviod any conflics which may arise. Encourage students to combine their entreprenurship class for one of the projects. Overall I really enjoyed the class, it provided me with essential information to be successful in today's rapidly changing society. LS

Before going into my last semester I could not help but be upset that i had to take an new (extra) class. Why me? Did I do something wrong. But after reading the posting in the Disscusion board I learned that the future of business is E-Commerce and that I am thankful that I got to take this course. This course will probably become the most usefull course comming out of Seneca College. This course advanced me on building web pages, which I have found out that I really enjoy and am considering it as a possibility once I finnish, and teaches you how to buy and market your business on the web. I first got to learn how to rate a web page which got me to learn how to design a storefront and then on my next assignment got to build a store front(GAMEWEB.CA). I took that assignment very seriously by really getting involved with getting quotes and the designing and layout of the site. As you can see we put alot of effort. Then with the last assignment I made a personal site so when I start to look for the jobs I can send companies there to get the scoop on me. My personal site has my resume and explains what I enjoy and what I like. I also spent alot of time on this building the site in frames. I wanted to make the site look professional so that when people visit the site they will know that I have alot of skills and that I am a hard worker. The last thing that this course had was the discussion boards. These were really good because most of the people including myself did not know much about E-Commerce so the discussion boards got me involved and got me to learn more about it. Each discussion was important to the course and taught me more about E-Commerce. After looking at all of my classmates work I can see that they felt the same way as me. Each and every student seemed to put alot of work into there projects and it shows that everyone took a liking to the course. I am very glad that I had the chance to take the course and esspecially that we were the first Seneca students to take this course. I hope that we showed the school well by being the first class to take it. I thank you Selia for being a fair and approachable teacher. I hope all goes well for further advancement of this course. NS

My assessment of this course is that at first I wasn't too thrilled about the idea of taking another compulsonary course that deals with the creation of web page design. I thought that the computer applications class that I took in the fourth semester was enough. But then later on I came to realized that class wasn't very practical and my web page look very amateurish. So now my overall thoughts about this course is that I found it to be very useful and essential in teaching the basic fundamentals of the development of a web page. My only suggestion is that the course should provide the Front Page program instead of being limited to just Netscape Composer. Besides the Front Page program is far more professional and advanced and provides all the necessary tools in making an effective web site. PT

The course is very informative, but having a text for the course may be useful. The only problem is finding the right text. Maybe two textbooks will be required for the future of the course. The two texts could be one on webpage design, and the second text could be on the business and legal side of e-commerce. This way actual fisical tests can be held to learn about the ways e-commerce works in the real world. BT

In my opinion, this was one of the best courses in semester 6. This was a good learning experience. This course taught us something that we could use in real life. For example, especially the last project, which could be used to market ourselves in the real world by showing poeple what we can do (portfolio).

I know that you wanted to know which book would be good for this course. A couse like e-commerce I find is hands-on, by that I mean doing a lot of experimenting, fooling around, asking questions, asking for help and trial and error with the programs to creat websites. So, I think it should be a combination of both theory and practice. Theory comes in use when learning how to create websites using html.

As for the discussion board, I found it to be useful in keeing up with what's happening in e-commerce and learning a thing or two about e-commerce. I would also recommend having other web editing programs such as Frontpage.

In regards to your teaching style. Don't change it a bit. Keep up the good work! Thank you, it was a pleasure having you as our teacher. FY
