Week
Six: October 11-15, 2004
| Library Quiz & Guest Speakers | Time Monitoring Teams | Reading and Tests | Looking Ahead |
At the beginning of class, be prepared to take a short quiz covering the material you reviewed in Library Assignments One and Two.
Following the quiz, you will have the opportunity to hear one or two guest speakers.
This week, Guest speaker(s) are planning to tell you all about the many services available to you at Seneca.
Please make a note of any questions you have been wanting to ask about anything that might fall into their realm of expertise as a student advisors. I am sure they will be happy to advise you and/or to suggest where you can find the information you are seeking.
One of your assignments was to construct a time chart. It is hoped that now that you are aware of how you are spending your time, that you will be making an effort to set aside time for the reading of your POWER textbook - each week the reading assignment corresponds to the chapter. So as this is week six, you need to read Chapter Six. Keeping up is important - we don't have time to go over all of that material in class in the short time we have together. The information this week is about taking exams - good information for you as we come to preparation for mid-term exams.
As you and your team begin to work on the presentations and final exams construction, you may need to set aside even more time in order to complete your share of the work.
Last week in class teams were formed. Please check the link to Teams
on the main page of the course to see your team if you were absent.
In the weeks ahead, you will be working with your team on two projects,
an activity you and your team will create for the class and a final exam
you will build for another team to take. On the Team page, the chapter(s)
for your activity and the chapters for your exam creation are given.
On the team page you will also find links to Team
Roles and to Team
Evaluation. The team projects are worth a total value of 20 points.
You may need to create your own Team Roles and Evaluation if the number
of members on your team is less than seven. Otherwise, you will have a
leader, two researchers, two writers and two activity coordinators to develop
the exam and the class activity for your chapter(s). If you have questions
about this Team Project, please ask in class.

Last week you were asked to please read Chapter Five: Taking Notes
1. Look at the questions for Journal Reflections
on page 127
2. Think about your answers for these
seven questions.
3. You had a chance to work with your
team on taking notes. At the end of class, I asked you to put down the
themes of the five articles that were presented based on your note-taking
abilities with others in your class. This is a good habit to get into.
Try it for a few days, at the end of a class, take out a card (or a piece
of paper) and see if you can list the main ideas covered in that class.
In class, you worked with a small group to read and take notes on a business article then reported on that article to the class. You did a good job of that exercise and I hope it will suggest to you that it's a good idea to form a study group for other work you need to cover for your classes.
For this week, please read Chapter Six on Test Taking.
1. Answer the nine questions in the Journal
Reflections section on page 151.
2. Take a few notes about what you read
in this chapter and add to notes for Chapter Five (last week).
3. Bring all of your notes on these two
chapters to class next week.
Next week we will be discussing what you have been reading and writing. Please take a few notes as you read so you can refer to these notes during our discussion. We will compare your note-taking technique on these two chapters with those of your team mates. Call it research!
