This week and next you will be submitting on your research assignments. Assignment number 1 is due this week and Assignment number 2 is due next week. Please check with me if you have questions about these assignments.
If you haven't done your assignments yet - what are you waiting for? After your next class, Assignment 1 is LATE! You will still have one week to do Assignment 2. Remember to print off your assignment to use for study for the quiz and as backup in case your e-mail doesn't get to me.
Here's the web address again:

NOTE: You may want to print off your assignments before submitting them so you have copies to review before the QUIZ on in Week Six when Assignment 2 is due.
"Don't Get Caught in the Web" is the video concerning library research that we watched. If you were absent and want to see this 18 minute video, check with AV services. The link for booking videos and equipment on-line is below.

I have been checking your time charts. Most of them were done in adequate detail for you to get an understanding of how you tend to spend you time. The idea is to discover time you might be using more wisely to study and get your assignments and projects done with plenty of time to revise and improve them. A few of the time sheets I looked at could have been done with more attention and these indicated to me that you are probably still struggling with time management. If you made less than 5 points or if you did not do this assignment then I suggest you make a greater effort to improve in this area of your life.
With using the Internet for finding things, your memory may not always help you remember all of the information you want to find or where to find it. For that reason you will want to gain expertise in being able to navigate the Web with the use of helpful searching tools. Last week I asked you to read Chapter Four in your book - it's the chapter on Finding and Using Information.
Having the Computer as a tool, opens up a great many resources when you do research. The Library assignments will hopefully help you make more efficient use of the library and those Internet resources now available thanks to librarians. Remember, linked from the main page of this course is a link to all kinds of valuable sites from search engines to other tools, like a dictionary site, the thesaurus site, a translation site and many more. You may want to bookmark this link to help you with searching with your computer - there are links to searching tutorials at the top of the site. http://people.senecac.on.ca/selia.karsten/EC/searching.html
How do you save bookmarks (Netscape) or favorites (Internet Explorer) ?
For Netscape, click on the button
on the browser toolbar that says Bookmarks.
Click on Add Bookmark. You may
want to create a folder for each type of bookmark you are saving so you
can keep your bookmarks organized. For this, go to Edit Bookmarks
then File and New Folder. You can drag and drop bookmarks
into folders.
2. For Internet Explorer, click on the button for Favorites on the browser toolbar. You can also create folders for your favorites. You can add to favorites and organize favorites.
For this week please read Chapter Five: Taking Notes
1. Look at the questions for Journal
Reflections on page 127
2. Think about your answers for these
seven questions.
3. Compare your answers to others in class.
In class we will be discussing what you have been reading and writing. What tips have you picked up from your reading? You'll have a chance to try your note-taking techniques using stories you will be given in class.
Next week in class you will be taking the Library QUIZ- don't miss this - no excuses!
There will be a Guest Speaker - a Student Advisor, who will give you lots of information about all of the student services available to you at Seneca. This is a very valuable information session - you won't want to miss. And you can practice your note-taking skills!
