Video and More

In class this week you will be shown an 18 minute video entitled, "Don't Get Caught in the Web: research Strategies Using Library Resources". The video will hopefully help you get a positive start on your Library research assignments.  If you miss the video and want to see it, go to the librarian desk in the Learning Commons and ask if you can view it there. It's called, "Caught in the Web".

We will also be looking at the postings in the Introduction Forum and at the Student Home Pages at MySeneca.
As well, I will show you how to go to the link for the Library Research Assignments One and Two.

Library Research Assignments

The Library Research Assignments are done using a computer, using either your computer at home connected to the Internet or using a computer in the Annex or in another lab around campus. If you find a lab where there is a class in session, please have the courtesy to speak to the instructor to ask if you can use one of the computers not in use. It can be very distracting when you go into a lab where a class is working. Each instructor has the option to allow you to stay or not. Please respect this courtesy of asking first and you will have a better chance of being allowed to stay.

I sometimes have extra computers in my labs if you want to check my schedule and ask me about coming into my class at that time.

The Research Tutorial introduces concepts and research skills that are applicable to other courses and that will be useful in the workplace.

It is recommended that you complete the Orientation Module before beginning work on other modules.

  1. Work through the required modules before starting an assignment.
  2. Try the self test exercises.  These exercises will help you understand the content of each module.
  3. If you want a printed copy of the lesson content, print the module summaries that are available from the Navigation Bar in each module.

The Research Quiz

In Week Six, at the beginning of class there will be a quiz given in class - the library research quiz. This is not a good day to be absent! Plan ahead to be sure you are in class on time. We will also have a guest speaker or speakers on that day.

Looking Ahead

I hope you are keeping up with the reading. Chapter Four in your textbook is about Finding and Using Information - just in time for the Library Research you are doing. For next week, have a look at Chapter Five on Note Taking. You will get to try your note taking skills.

You will be working in small groups or teams. By working with a team, I hope you will get to know some of your class mates a little better as soon you will be working in a team to create a Final Exam on one of the chapters in the textbook and as a team you will help present an activity on a topic from this same chapter.
