Graphic and Web Design
Students focus on developing the skills needed to make effective, informative and creative marketing publications. Activities include both individual and team assignments and involve the use of graphics and desktop publishing software and web page editing and video and .pdf format creation to develop marketing projects.

Prerequisites: 

ICA 001 or an equivalent introductory subject. 

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject will be able to:
 

1. Demonstrate the ability to make professional print and web-based marketing materials. by designing, developing and publishing a variety of business-related publications using a range of appropriate software programs. 

2. Create online marketing promotional web pages demonstrating the ability to use a template to create a web site including how to insert appropriate graphics, adding pages, the use of CSS sheets for text, tables for containers of content, linking and navigation.

3. Identify a variety of marketing strategies used in today’s business publications and be able to communicate on the effective use of marketing media in a range of formats. 

4. Conduct effective Internet research regarding class assignments and projects.

5. Analyze and evaluate information related to the design of graphics, text, slide show format and web pages and report this information with expertise.

6. Compare traditional business and marketing practices with e-marketing and online enterprise.

7.  Appropriately use an extensive business and technical vocabulary of marketing and publishing concepts.

8. Apply basic design and layout principles to produce professional presentations aids, incorporating text and graphics. 

9.  Prepare a design report demonstrating knowledge of principles and elements of design as used in print materials, slide shows and web pages. 

10. Organize presentation materials using structured formulas and techniques to promote clarity and comprehension. 

11. Work effectively with a team to coordinate and perform using professional presentation skills while demonstrating reliability, effective communications, and attention to all assigned deadlines. Collaborate to create and present a professional Power Point presentation marketing a product or service with the team. Critically evaluate self and peers using a pre-determined set of project criteria.

12. Apply idea generation techniques as well as target audience, occasion and logistic research to develop appropriate business publications. Modify a range of media created in various formats as required.

13.  Demonstrate how to use Camtasia Studio 4 to create a video file with audio, convert the video into a ‘streaming media format’ either windows media of flash, and embed the video on a prescribe web page on a web site. 

14.  Know how to select appropriate graphics, text, colour and linking, to use ‘tables’ effectively for appropriate page layout, how to work with images that are web safe and properly resized. 

15. Convert a document into a PDF file and know how to link a PDF file that has an effective use of security, added footnotes, document description, page display, and appropriate indexing.


 
 

Modes of Instruction

A variety of instructional and learning modes may be used, including but not limited to, lectures, independent and/or guided labs, tutorials, demonstrations, instructions and problem solving, instructions regarding assignments, review exercises and independent assignments, individual and group projects.

Student Responsibilities

- Students are expected to use the Computer Commons, other Seneca College resources, and home computers for the extra computer time necessary to complete assigned tasks and to practice the skills required to meet the learning outcomes. 

- Students will be assigned exercises that are to be competed in addition to assigned projects. 

- Students are expected to conduct themselves in a professional, business-like manner. Evaluation methods and standards will reflect those of the business world. 

- All submitted work should be completed on or before the specified date. It is the student's responsibility to keep a back-up copy of his/her work. 

- Missed assignments will receive a grade of zero. Late assignments receive partial credit. 

- It is the student's responsibility to read this Subject outline carefully and ask questions to resolve problems so that the requirements and expectations are clearly understood. It is recommended that students keep this outline for future reference.
