Welcome What's What First Assignment

WELCOME

These are exciting times. In this new course we are going to be exploring ways of marketing you and your skills.  The class meets once a week in a computer lab so you have an opportunity to use various software tools and access the online portions of the course. The course requires work outside of class time - just as with the polishing of any skills, time and devotion is needed.

This course is a hybrid or blended course, with part of the curriculum found online. It is designed to include an approach to learning called problem-based learning or constructivism.  Constructivism simply stated means that you will be building your own knowledge. There won't be a lot of lecturing. Many resources have been provided online to help you with what you will be doing. You can have help in person with your projects as you request it. You can get a lot done each lab session (or not - it's up to you). You'll have a chance to discuss various topics online using BlackBoard.  There are some excellent links for you to explore.  If you look at the schedule you'll see what is being covered each week. There will be a number of workshops available to you through the Career Centre to supplement and support the work done in class. Attending and reporting on at least two workshops is a required activity.

WHAT'S WHAT?

Although we meet in person, we will also be using "virtual" classrooms.  First of all there is the course home page.  One this page you will find links to a number of pages that will be helpful to you.  Here's what you can expect to find.

1. Course Schedule with due dates:  This table lays out the activities and projects so that you can be aware of due dates (marked in red).  It is a good idea to become very familiar with this table so that you can plan ahead for deadlines.  You are invited to work ahead rather than waiting until the last minute.  Each semester, students tend to forget just how many final papers and projects come due and are disappointed that they don't have the time and energy to do their best work.  I encourage you to take advantage of knowing what lies ahead.

2.  MySeneca:  This links to the MySeneca site that you will be using on a regular basis.  The courseware is called BlackBoard. On this site there are online discussion forums for the many issues surrounding career planning and job search. This site also allows you to build a brief biographical student web page to display to your classmates. You may also use the communication section to e-mail your classmates. The login name is the same as your learn user ID. This site is password protected - and your student number is the password. A team space will be provided for your team when it is time for you to work on the profile project for the course. The project involves getting to know more about graduates of the Seneca Marketing Administration program.

3. Forums Described: If you come to the course homepage without going into MySeneca, you can read about the forums in advance and work on your posting in WORD. Later, you can copy and paste from the document you created into the message form for that forum.

4. Assignments and Projects:  This is a summarized list of the main activities, assignments and projects so that you can quickly remind yourself of the basic requirements.  More in depth information will be found in the weekly materials published at the course main page.

5. FAQ: These are anticipated questions that you may have regarding some of the details of the course.  If you have ideas for other questions, please send them along.

6.Web Resources: This page has resources that refer more specifically to items that can be helpful with the tools for building the projects and sites associated with the course. It is a shared resource that is used by all of my courses. I appreciate your telling me when you find an inactive link or a new link that I can add.

7. Career Resources: This page contains additional information regarding the course, much as a library contains references you may need. These resources have been gathered with the hopes that they can be helpful to you.  Also, if you find resources and links that you think will benefit the course, please don't hesitate to send the URLs in an e-mail with the subject line - Resources.

8. Subject Outline: This document gives you the intended learning outcomes for the course as well as the plan for marking and other related information.

9. Profile Project Criteria: These are the guidelines for what will be evaluated in the team project to create a multi-media profile of a Marketing Administration student who graduated from Seneca College and who has been out in the work word for a few years.

10. Profile Projects: Completed projects will be placed on the Web using a program called Impatica, that saves Power Point presentations in a web-viewable format.

11. ePortfolio Resources: This page contains links to a variety of sites that have to do with eportfolios.

12. ePortfolio & Portfolio Criteria: These are the guidelines for what will be evaluated in both the portfolio and the eportfolio project.

Also on the Course Home Page, you will find notes for Weeks One through Twelve.  Each week, usually on the Sunday before the classes begin, the new week's information will be linked.  The material posted each week  are required reading for the course.  It is your responsibility to keep up with this information.  Some of the information will likely be covered in class in more detail.

Attendance is recommended in order to work on on-going projects.

Searching on the Web: this page contains links for a variety of search engines and other useful research sites

Selia's Schedule:  Here you will find my teaching schedule for this semester along with my office location and phone number.  You will probably find it more convenient to e-mail me when you have questions or need to set up an appointment.

Selia's ePortfolio: - this is my eportfolio for teaching and related activities

Selia.Karsten@senecac.on.ca - this is a link to my e-mail here at Seneca

First Assignment

Go to Projects and follow the recommendations there for Assignment One.  You'll be creating a student web page and completing a tour of the course home page and associated links, and posting to the first of the weekly forums.

Notebooks - It is recommended that you keep a notebook in which you record your progress in this course. In the log please keep up with your assignments, jot down questions you'd like to ask in class, sketch out ideas for your projects, record interesting URLs and resource materials. You can find out more about notebooks in the FAQ section linked from the main page.  Some of you may decide to keep your notes online, creating a web page where you edit your notes. Experiment and see what works best for you. Check out Blogger - it's another way to record your notes and ideas.

For next time - please bring your updated resume to class for review. Find out where the Career Centre is on campus if you don't already know. You need to get a schedule of their workshops and bring that to class for a discussion of which workshops you'll be attending this semester. In getting acquainted with the course home page, become familiar with the Marketing Graduate Profile Project Criteria and with the ePortfolio and Portfolio Criteria.

Questions? Please put your name/section/question in the subject line of your message. e-mail Selia
