Outline: CAP506 Winter 2007

MARKETING CAREER LAUNCHING AND PORTFOLIO DEVELOPMENT

Prerequisites: 

 MRK224, MRK410 or an equivalent introductory subject. 

Course Description
This hybrid course reviews the essentials of Marketing and transferable skills acquired during the three year program. Participants develop professional Portfolios and ePortfolios that include examples of course work. Career strategies include research, networking, job search, interview skills, support systems and professional development plans. Profiles of successful graduates provide "real world" case studies. 

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of CAP506, Career Launching and Portfolio Development students will be able to:

1. Identify personal career related skills and selected artifacts (such as an updated resume, sample cover letters, certificates, testimonials, examples of best school work, a business card) for development and production of a professional portfolio and eportfolio. Take part in self and peer evaluation of course projects. 

2. Compile resources related to career strategies and professional development in the marketing field to add to a professional portfolio and eportfolio

3. Attend career related workshop(s) and research and use sources of employment information and networking to understand the current job market

4. Develop a personal database of information related to employers and successful graduates in order to identify professional role models

5. Working as a team member, create a "profile" of a successful Seneca Marketing graduate. Deliverables will include: a profile project plan, an interview of a graduate, a working schedule with timelines and the completed "product" - a multimedia Power Point presentation and a summary and evaluation of the project.

Modes of Instruction

A variety of instructional and learning modes may be used, including but not limited to, lectures, independent and/or guided labs, tutorials, demonstrations, instructions and problem solving, instructions regarding assignments, review exercises and independent assignments, individual and group projects. 

Required Texts

A hardcover portfolio binder needs to be purchased. (Available from the Seneca Bookstore) 
Required reading - all linked pages from the course home page and all files for the course at My Seneca.
No books are required, however many resources are recommended.

Students using home computers are advised to save all Word and Power Point files in

                Student Responsibilities

- Students are expected to use the Micro Centre, other Seneca College resources, and home computers for the extra computer time necessary to complete assigned tasks and to practice the skills required to meet the learning outcomes. 

- Students will be assigned writings that are to be competed in addition to assigned projects. 

- Students are expected to conduct themselves in a professional, business-like manner. Evaluation methods and standards will reflect those of the business world. 

- All submitted work should be completed on or before the specified date. It is the student's responsibility to keep a back-up copy of his/her work. 

- Missed assignments will receive a grade of zero. Late assignments receive partial credit. 

- It is the student's responsibility to read this Subject outline carefully and ask questions to resolve problems so that the requirements and expectations are clearly understood. It is recommended that students keep this outline for future reference.
